If it Quacks Like a Duck, it’s Porn!

Sometimes porn is just porn.  It’s not some new phenomenal art form.  It just is what it’s always been.

I promised myself that I wasn’t going to write about this because I didn’t want to be internet yelled at by people with whom I’d normally agree.  I’m also, so Fr. Z once observed (Oh yes, I did name drop!), not a normal “mommy blogger.”  I take pride in that and this wanders dangerously close to a “mommy blogger” topic. . That said, I’ve really just become sick of the kitschy Catholics trying to rationalize this one away.  It’s becoming akin to active same-sex attractive people trying to say sodomy isn’t sodomy because they love each other. Or, probably a better comparison, all those people who saw “50 Shades of Whatever” and tried to say it was just how the world was now.  Blech!  It does seem to be reflection of the disease where we all want our sins to be accepted by our buds. I’m not immune, but geez, this just seems to be so obvious.

Let me first put out this disclaimer.  I LOVE, I mean, LOVE TV and movies.  I don’t think anyone who knows me would consider me in the “Amish” realm of Catholicism.  I love to be up on pop culture, etc.  I listen to modern music, I try not to sport mom jeans, and I try to take “living in the world but not being of the world” to heart. So keep all the “You just don’t live in the real world!” comments to yourself.

So let’s look at this little “Please don’t tell me watching Game of Thrones might be morally wrong!” article:

A Defense of Game of Thrones

July 20, 2017 by Rebecca Bratten Weiss

Admitting that I am a fan of the hugest TV hit series of the moment can get me some side-eye in Catholic circles, but it is true: I love Game of Thrones. I love the book series on which it is based, A Song of Ice and Fire, even more: a slightly more morally acceptable confession, because at least no one yells at me for watching porn.

“Game of Thrones is porn” is the mantra I keep hearing from right-wing bloggers and posters of memes. One is tempted to dismiss this charge on the grounds that everyone who repeats it does so while also stating that they haven’t watched it – since anyone wanting to do art analysis should probably start by seeing the thing before making a judgment on it. But, of course, people can decide what they want to see or avoid based on descriptions. And yes, some things we know are porn without having to see them. They are marketed as such, labeled as such. The question is, is there a grey area where a work of art or entertainment veers somewhat into the pornographic? And does Game of Thrones veer this way?

“Want some candy, little girl?” just popped into my head.  Seriously?  “You don’t HAVE to watch it, but don’t you think that you should so you can make a more ‘educated’ judgement about it?”  I really hate the way people try to attack one’s “education” as a way of shutting down debate.  She did begrudgingly admit that one can make the judgment based on the voluminous amount of ink spilled on it, though.  How kind of her.

In order to answer this we need to be a little clearer on what pornography is. The presence of nudity, and even of explicit sex, is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for a work to be sexually pornographic. The necessary condition is manipulation towards the end of sexual arousal. Towards this end, stories in works of pornography are at best tenuous frameworks designed to get as quickly as possible to the point. Porn viewers do not want to sit through fifty minutes of complex story-telling in order to get a brief flash of nudity. No one who has access to internet porn is going to waste time on Game of Thrones – unless, perhaps, their interest in the story is sufficient to lure them away from a porn addiction. In which case, that is a good thing.

At this point, Rebecca might want to read this article: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/confidential/pornhub-traffic-plummets-game-thrones-season-premiere-article-1.3335493.  Please read the full article, but here’s the short version:  Pornhub’s traffic plummets on GoT’s premier night.  Let’s see.  Why do you think that is?  Is it luring people away from addiction or just fulfilling it?  I mean it’s an addiction.  Suddenly the people that pay for porn have found a laudible sub?  Come on, people!  I somehow don’t see all the porn addicts dropping everything and going to the Vatican art collection on-line to get away from their porn addiction.  The GoT people know that porn is addictive.  What better way to keep the ratings up?  Mainstreaming porn is a total advertising win.  Only a small subset of folks is going to say you’re a porn fiend now.  Your addiction is now acceptable.

This doesn’t mean people won’t be aroused by nudity, but at a certain point the fact of possible arousal becomes negligible, because it is culturally conditioned. There was a time when seeing a woman’s calf would have sent men reeling into helpless lust. This does not mean that showing a woman’s calf is pornographic. In some cultures, it is typical for women to go topless. This is not pornographic, either.

Isn’t this kind of the problem???  We’re not “culturally conditioned.”  We are culturally desensitized.  It ain’t a woman’s calf we’re talking about here, and it’s not the works of the masters, either.  Just because the culture is desensitized doesn’t mean that it’s good.  I would think you might possibly have paused to think a little bit before writing this.

Pornography by its nature dehumanizes the body and reduces it to a sex object for gratification and use. This is different from representations of the human body which elicit heightened awareness of personhood. Such representations are not always necessarily lovely. The crucifixion, a bodily image at the heart of the Catholic imagination, is proof of this. Some Protestant Christians are horrified by our seemingly ghoulish obsession with a depiction of horrific torture, the twisted and bleeding human body which is also the body of God. But it is precisely this juxtaposition of horror and beauty which is the message of grace.

Does ANYONE have a problem with GoT being juxtaposed to the Crucifixion?!?!  She seriously jumped the shark with this one. She talks about porn dehumanizing the person.  What the heck does comparing  The Game of Thrones to the Crucifixion do to Christ’s sacrifice for us?  Something is seriously wrong when you go to such lengths to watch a TV show!

I would suggest that for the most part the representations of sex and violence in Game of Thrones are intended to elicit this heightened awareness of humanity. Yes, much of the sex is exploitative, but this is portrayed as negative, intended to awaken a sense of justice. Again, a juxtaposition of horror and beauty.

Grasping. At. Straws.  If you can’t do this without the porn thrown in, you’re not much of a screenwriter.

The few sex scenes that are tender and intimate are portrayed with a kind of veiling that respects the privacy of human love. Actor Emilia Clarke’s insistence on being clothed for her representation of Daenerys’ “seduction” of her warlord husband had the effect of increasing awareness of the surprising tenderness that bloomed within what should have been a traumatic relationship, a forced marriage for military and political ends. The contrast between truly loving relationships that endure even in the midst of the darkness and violence of a world at war – and the violent sex acts performed in the moral corruption of that world – tends to showcase what it is that is vulnerable and lovable about persons, and personal bodies.

So, as long as porn (soft porn, etc.) are portrayed as loving, it’s OK?  Again, let’s go back to the sodomy and Pornhub examples.  And then there’s the MANY classic movies that have achieved the same goal without “vivid” portrayals of what should be the marital embrace.

“I have a tender spot in my heart for cripples, bastards, and broken things,” says Tyrion, my favorite character, and this could be considered the deepest theme of the story. Bear in mind, too, that in the novels, George R. R. Martin makes it clear that “broken” can mean “morally broken.” There are “broken men” who, shattered by war, roam the country like ravening wolves, but we are reminded – by one of the few truly good characters in the story, a holy man – that they are to be pitied. So, yes, most of the people in Game of Thrones do dreadful things, even some of our favorites. That’s what brokenness means. That’s what sin means.”

Again, it’s totally ridiculous to suggest the “artistry” would be gone without this?  Methinks that people just don’t watch the classics anymore. There have been MANY movies with the classic flawed heroes that were beautiful.

This is connected with a sort of via negativa in the religious sense of the story, in which the divine is made present in moments of silence, and among the most disenfranchised – but that is a subject for a different post.

Oh, goody.  Another post.

I will close with two caveats: first, no, it is not a show for everyone. Not everyone finds catharsis in stories of darkness and violence, but some of us do. Some simply find these representations disturbing. And obviously, it is not for children….but, then, neither is wine. And just as wine could be dangerous for some, so could depictions of graphic violence be harmful both for those inclined to perpetrate such acts, and those who have been victims of them. Second, I agree with some critics that the showrunners sometimes go too far. Storytellers have to tread with care on many issues, especially in depictions of sex and violence, and not everyone always gets it right. Especially when money is at stake. Especially when rape culture is so, distrubingly, normative.

The rape culture is normative because of shows like this.  The slippery slope is real people.  Interestingly enough, I haven’t heard one critique which complains of the violence.  I’m sure there are some, but Catholics rarely balk at that.  It doesn’t have the same seductive effect on the brain.  And, as the author rightly pointed out, we have a Faith centered around a tortuous, horrifically violent act.  Mel Gibson, for all his flaws, is the master of screen violence with the purpose to move people toward the beauty of humanity.  The characters in the movies he directs are flawed, yet love and intimacy is portrayed without the pornographic portrayal.  Braveheart, The Passion, Apocolypto, Hacksaw Ridge.  Even in The Patriot, which he didn’t direct but starred in, you knew his deep love for his family and even the wife who’s dead before the movie even gets going.  No graphic sex needed to emote humanity or the flawed hero.

The books, as we always say, are better – in this regard and in others.

But fundamentally, I believe, the story unfolding in Game of Thrones is profoundly moral, and – at a time of global unrest when we look on helpless at the suffering of the most vulnerable – very timely.

Hold up.  Can you say stretching?  To compare Game of Thrones to the reality of the Christians being persecuted in Islamic countries, babies being aborted on a daily basis, the plight of the poor in Africa, etc., is completely RIDICULOUS.  I must have somehow missed the pornography in their plight.  Please.  This is just offensive.  You can’t be moral and righteous and pornographic.  You want to quibble on the porn end, go ahead.  Personally, I think you are grasping at excuses.

Just a little antidote, when this whole Game of Thrones premier hysteria came up, I snagged one of my 20-somethings and asked if they had seen it. (Can’t really police them all that much after they reach a certain age.)  The 20-something in question, who has always loved a good story, especially in the pseudo-Greek mythology of Marvel, said “No-ho-ho-ho!  I’ve heard about the graphic sex scenes and the fact that you might as well not invest time in finding a hero to root for because they will die anyway.”  Thank you for validating my existence my dear child!  Seems like the 20-somethings might be a little more honest with themselves than Ms. Weiss and the other Catholics justifying GoT.

  1. Don’t know if you saw the story in Lifesite News about Apologists Steve Ray publicly shaming a men in the Detroit airport for wearing a Porn Hub t-shirt. Ray told him he was a pervert. Here is the link to the story: https://www.lifesitenews.com/pulse/man-gets-called-out-for-wearing-porn-site-shirt-you-are-a-pervert

If this author has now shame or scruples in watching this show, would she be willing to watch an episode with her priest beside her? (Today, this is a loaded question and an article for a future blog post.)

    1. A similar question came to my mind for the author – “What saint would agree with you?”

As long as our goal is to walk as close to the edge of the cliff as possible without falling off, we are in big trouble. Any shepherd will tell you that sheep will walk off cliffs… Perhaps (!) it is possible to watch GoT without sinning, but that is not a path to flourishing.

If so, “the presence of nudity (or) even of explicit sex” need not be solely in the form of ‘dirty pitchers’. Words alone will do. Failure to recognize this is a symptom of the poorly formed consciences of the 60 million females who bought 50 Shades… and other lies.

  2. On Sept 11th 2001 I watched the news break in with Dan Rather as he showed a cell phone video. He introduced the video by saying he did not know the content and that we should be prepared? I SHOULD HAVE TURNED OFF THE TV!
The video showed the airliner colliding into the sears towers, and as we watched in the back ground was a lady……. no a woman…… screaming “Jesus F****** Christ” over and over and over and over at the top of her lungs on Dan Rather’s good time show!
I should have thrown a shoe through the TV which as a hand me down, but instead I gave it away.

June 8th 2007 at 2pm my son drowned in a boating accident at a South Carolina lake during a Catholic Home School camporee. I had to see my son die. It still is terrible for me and my wife. Over the next 15 days the rescue dive team looked for and then found my Joshua.

Over this period the TV stations (Local and national) CNN, CBS, Fox…….. all of them hounded me and my family. Our sons death was on National and indeed International TV as we received mail from Japan, England and New Zealand.
The TV cameras were in front of our house around 7am and left at 11:30pm typically. They followed us when we left our house until we returned. They hounded our neighbors, and our friends and family. They repeatedly tried to access the Search and Rescue compound at the lake by claiming to be our family members or in-Laws.

The rescue / recovery dive team found Joshua on the 15th day after he died. We had his scheduled funeral later that afternoon with out his body. An empty beginning to a life now empty of my little boys love. It was a true miracle that they found Joshua but that is another story.

At the High Mass of the Angles (the first in SC in 45 years) funeral, the press was anticipated to Paparazzi my wife, children and I as we came into and out of the Church. As a preventative measure the Local Fire Department provided screening with a long line of fire trucks to keep the press at bay. Joshua loved Fire Men and they loved him like their own son even in death. At 11:30 pm after a long funeral and reception in the church hall, followed by clean up, we all loaded up our family and headed to the house.

AT THE ENTRY TO THE PARKING LOT WAS A FOX21 CAMERA CREW WITH LIGHTS FILMING US AS WE LEFT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11:30PM.

I was told by the police investigators who were involved with my sons death, that “The PRESS ARE MAGGOTS”. Do yourself a favor and do not talk to them they are not your friends. All they care about is making money off your pain and the pain of others.

This is true for their NEWS, for their shows, for their “Specials”. It is their reason for being.

Don’t be the one who one day tells himself “‘I SHOULD HAVE TURNED OFF THE TV!”

I know because; I am that guy who cried the tears that made them $$$$$$$ by entertaining you.

    1. OH! God bless you my dear man…..God bless your family and heal your pain.

And you are 120% right about not just the press, but about the media in general. I Finally had enough 5 years ago when watching the Food Channel (THE FOOD CHANNEL!), one of only 4 channels we would watch, and having the militant sodo propaganda thrust down our throats….did I mention it was THE FOOD CHANNEL???? I called Verizon the next morning and said “cut it off…I don’t want the garbage streamed into my house.” She said, “but you’re going to pay more for less”, I said “I don’t care…. I don’t want the garbage streamed into my house!” It was one of the best decisions we ever made in our lives…..more peace; more prayer; more solitude and thought.

Until the Body of Christ is willing, enmasse, to cut the cable; turn in the ‘smart phones’ and use a flip-phone for calls ONLY; hammer to shards the video games that are destroying their children’s minds, attention spans, and souls; stay out of the theaters and stop feeding the unholy hollywood beast (!); take the precious children out of the pagan state-run soul-killing machines called ‘schools’ and make the love-based sacrifice to home-school, inculcating Christian Faith, values, and decency; stop reading books that would have made our grandmothers either blush scarlet, or start whacking heads against the walls for peddling ‘that smut’; and a billion other things we do daily with nary a second thought, having slid, desenitized ever so gradually, into the very mouth of hell.

WAKE UP PEOPLE!….shut it all off. ‘In but not of’ means not partaking in the soul-suck of the world, but living as flames amidst the darkness….imparting the light rather than having your spark snuffed out, while deluding yourself all the while that you’re still a torch. Shut it all off….cut the cords…and breath fresh air again.

      1. I’m not a “turn it off” type of person. I don’t feel called to live in a bunker and entertainment and technology is not in and of itself evil. Like everything else there has to be balance and standards. I thank God everyday for the internet because, well, you’re reading this. I’ve been a Catholic/pro-life activist pretty much all my life and the internet has been remarkable for getting around the liberal bastion. In reality, it’s the use of the internet that is bringing Planned Parenthood to their knees right now. For the most part, it’s what freedom of the press use to be before they jumped in the liberal tank.

        1. actually, I wasn’t talking about the internet so much (obviously I’m using it, and paying Verizon more for it because I cut the TV cable). While it has HUGE potential for bad, it also It has MUCH potential for good, because the average, reasonable, rational guy can still have a big say (ie; good Catholic bloggers). BUT, what I am talking about, and please read my points again, is if you are still feeding the hollywood beast then you are decidedly a big part of the problem and in a real blurry line between formal and material cooperation with evil (while OBVIOUSLY there are exceptions like Braveheart, Dunkirk, inter alia…I’m speaking in the general; I assumed that was understood). If you are buying stuff off of amazon to save a few bucks and putting more $ into Dr. Evil’s bloody hands, you are in a real blurry line between formal and material cooperation with evil. If you are allowing the state to brainwash your children in the immoral, anti-American, anti-Christian, sexual cesspools of public schools then you might be squarely in the middle of exclusively formal cooperation with evil. If you’re shopping at Target, you’re part of the problem. If you’re eating at McDonald’s, you’re part of the problem. If caligula is deciding what comes thru the airwaves into your house (and make no mistake, he is, and you’re paying him big $ every month for the privilege of spewing degeneracy into the sanctuary of your home), and then argue that “I’m not a “turn it off” kinda person”, then sorry, you’ve just negated your whole (otherwise excellent) post. The lady watching GofT just wants to ‘not be in a bunker mentality and keep up with what’s happening’ too.

Same argument; 52 shades of gray in difference.

          1. I think we’re pretty much on the same page. We must be discerning with where our money goes as far as feasible. No quibbles there. That said, I have the luxury of homeschooling, some do not. I have friends whose children attend public school because they have no alternatives due to financial and health issues. In fact, my child goes to a state school for college because 1)the close to affordable Catholic schools didn’t have the chosen major and 2). I “indoctrinated” my child first and the kids there are better for having her. LOL!

I’m pro-boycotting but, no, I don’t boycott every stupid company and, no, I’m not materially cooperating with the ridiculous stances they choose to make. Nobody is a purist in this area. I can walk into any faithful Catholic’s home and probably pick out 20 things bought from companies with issues but we do what we can.

            Like

          2. I think you’re exactly right and we are on the same page….no arguments intended. I guess I’m just trying to say that we’ve got to get a whooooole lot better at seriously living our Faith in such an increasingly toxic culture or we get poisoned, and spread the poison, without even realizing it. We make too many excuses to not do things that are do-able with some work, but would be uncomfortable in some way for us. Like the homeschooling thing when money or health are issues…there are ways. I have a friend who worked her butt off to set up a cooperative. She now has a wildly successful venture on her hands, with the work and responsibility spread wide, and a curriculum would make Aquinas smile. There are ways.

And we need to be increasing ‘purists in this area’. If you come to know that a company is doing immoral stuff with the money they make, and you then choose to continue patronizing them, you most certainly are materially contributing to the evil…no matter how many times you say, ”pshaaaa, no I’m not”. They might have really pretty stuff, or really good food….’but for Wales?’ We’ve got to get a lot more serious about it, even and especially when it causes us discomfort. I’ve fallen short, but am making a serious effort to consciously and diligently do better in this respect.

Can you imagine if tomorrow, 90% of professed Christians (heck, just the Catholics) woke up and called the cable company and said, “I’m sick of the smut you’re polluting my home with, for Pete’s sake, HGTV is pushing sodomy as just great. Cut my cable”. Can you imagine? Now, multiply that by Target, McDonalds, amazon, starbucks, etc, etc, et-stinkin-cetera. We would change the world in one week….seriously, ONE WEEK.

Anyway, I really don’t mean to pick a fight…I love your spirit, your writing, and your guts. I’m just so tired of a world where the manufacture of sex robots that you can set to simulate rape on the part of the user, is heralded as a good thing. I’m tired of worse than a rudderless Barque of Peter, rather a madman steering purposely into the cliffs. I’m tired of Catholics not taking this gift of unspeakable value seriously, and with not an ounce of gratitude or effort….(and I’m not speaking of you here…you’re one of the decidedly good guys, and I’m thankful for your voice).

I’m tired of being poisoned, and seeing my loved ones poisoned, and hearing, “but it’s soooo haaaard” as the state rapes our youth of all innocence and their very salvation. Our great grandparents would have stormed with pitchforks; we sigh and finish our yoga class.

We have got to do a MUCH better job at truly living and breathing the Faith. Can you imagine a ‘stand of the Vendee’ in this culture when we can’t even cut our cable?….or give up our cup of Starbucks? We’re worse than soft….we know better….we just don’t want to. Darkened minds; weakened wills; slavery to sin.

By the way, it’s the Jews who control the media, Hollywood and the porn industry. Christians need to wake up about the destruction of their culture. Read the Talmud, we’re just goyim trash to them. It’s not anti-Semitic to point out facts.

        1. thanks for not deleting my comment, as often the knee-jerk reaction these days is ==> you’re Hitler! We really need to become “woke” about who controls all of this smut that’s ruining our culture. Read the brilliant Catholic scholar, E. Michael Jones. We’ve been so brainwashed that any criticism of powerful Jews is automatically labeled anti-Semtic. It’s not racist. Just read the history of the Jews and Freemasons on how and why they’ve been thrown out of many Catholic countries throughout history. Do people not think when you reject the Logos for so many centuries, that it won’t lead you to evil? Who do Catholics think we’re some of the major players behind the French and Bolshevik Revolutions? We need to bring back the powerful Good Friday prayer for their conversion. Vat II tossed it aside to be replaced by ecumenical madness such as Nostra Aetate.

  4. Friends don’t let friends read anything by Rebecca Bratten Weiss.

I used to watch this show when my faith was…enduring a real measure of hardship. As I began clawing my way back, I immediately recognized it had to go. Whether the scenes in question replace someone’s porn addiction is the wrong question. The better one would be whether they feed someone’s tendencies in this regard. For a man with restraint who otherwise has custody of his eyes, they are a serious temptation. For a man without it, they are an incitement of the passions and inducement to additional sin.

It doesn’t always work, but I like the rule: “If the actors most likely committed a sin filming it, you’re most likely committing one watching it.”

And to be honest, I doubt I’ll ever be virtuous enough that I won’t enjoy the sight of a naked, beautiful body. Which makes me really resent having to wonder if my entertainment is going to include that, and having to question if that forms part of my motivation for watching it. I’d love nothing more than to see some of these really well-written dramas exclude this crap so we can just enjoy everything but the salacious and unnecessary enticement.

Next, I totally agree on eliminating the crap. Soooooo many movies I would take my kids to if they just eliminated a word or two or the completely unnecessary sex scene. They’d actually make MORE money that way because it would broaden the audience pool. And really, are people going to go to, say, a Marvel movie and complain because there’s no crude comments, swearing or sex scenes? They’re blips in these movies, like token seconds for nothing.

It’s useless garbage, like so much other TV, music, books. Count me among the “catholic Amish”. I have never seen it because we got rid of cable around 7 years ago. Got so sick of the sleazy commercials and the transformation of H&G into a gay interior decorating channel. The last year I was only watching EWTN, then started streaming it instead. We realized that neither my husband nor I were watching cable anymore, just dvd’s from favorite series and movies, commercial-free! The more I hear about how very vulgar tv has gotten now, I am grateful to not have it polluting our brains and souls!!
We now use our tv as a computer monitor and stream and watch dvd’s. So happy with this set up.
All our Kids homeschool and they do the same at their homes, too.
